Junior Certificate Year 1/2/3

 

All students will study twelve subjects from first year through to Junior Certificate exams. They are 

Irish, English, French, Maths, History, Geography, CSPE, SPHE, Science, Business Studies and

one from each group.

 

They differ slightly by year.

 

First Year starting in September 2010

             a)    Home Economics or Materials Technology or Art

             

             b)    Music or Technology or Technical Graphics

 

Second Year (September 2010)

             a)    Home Economics or Materials Technology or Art

             

             b)    Music or Technology or Technical Graphics

 

Third Year (September 2010)

             a)    Home Economics or Materials Technology or Music

            

             b)    Art or Technology or Technical Graphics

 

 

Transition Year 

 

Aims of Transition Year at St. Joseph’s College

 

Provide students  with the opportunities to develop their personal, intellectual, spiritual, social, physical and emotional life in a caring, stimulating and varied learning environment

Provide a transition between Junior and Senior cycles

To provide students with opportunities for personal and social development

To provide a broad and balanced curriculum including the provision of additional support in the core subjects where possible

To help students to discover their inherent talents, skills and to foster a spirit of leadership amongst the cohort

To facilitate students in taking greater responsibility for their own learning and decision making

To prepare students for the world of work, further education and life-long learning

To provide students with supports and skills necessary to grow in self-confidence and develop a range of interpersonal skills

 

 

All students enter into a contract which guarantees students will work to the best of their abilities.

Leaving Certificate (5th Year)

 

Seven is the usual number of subjects taken by pupils in accordance with the following order.

 

Irish, English, French, Maths and a minimum of three from the following groups:

 

a) History/Geography/Physics/Economics

 

b) DCG/Accounting/Home Economics/Agricultural Science

 

c) Biology/Business/Music/Technology

 

d) Chemistry/Art/Construction Studies

 

Also LCVP is an option if your subject qualify you for this. Read details below 

 

 

Leaving Certificate (6th Year)

 

Seven is the usual number of subjects taken in accordance with the following order.

 

Irish, English, French, Maths and a minimum of three from the following groups:

 

a) History/Geography/Physics

 

b) DCG/Accounting/Home Economics/Agricultural Science

 

c) Biology/Business/Music/Technology

 

d) Chemistry/Art/Construction Studies 

 

Also LCVP is an option if your subject qualify you for this. Read details below

 

Link Modules

LCVP students follow the same subject syllabi and are assessed in the same way as their peers in
the Leaving Certificate. For the Link Modules they are assessed by Written Examination (40%) and
by Portfolio of Coursework (60%). The written examination takes place in May of the leaving
Certificate Year. The examination is of two and a half hour duration and consists of three sections
which are outline below:
  • Section A Audio Visual Presentation
  • Section B Case Study (received in advance by students)
  • Section C General Questions (4 out of 6)

The Portfolio of Coursework accounts for 60% of total marks. Students assemble the portfolio

over the two years of the programme and it is assessed at the end of the final year of the Leaving

Certificate.

How you qualify

Programme Requirements for students taking Leaving Certificate Examination from 2004 onwards

  • At least five Leaving Certificate subjects plus the Link Modules, one of which must
  • be Irish
  • Two of the above subjects must be selected from one of the designated Vocational
  • Subject Groupings
  • Two Link Modules: Preparation for the World of Work and Enterprise Education
  • A recognised course in a Modern European Language other than Irish or English:
     
  • Vocational Subject Groupings (VSGs)

Two subjects are selected from one of the Vocational Subject Groupings. These subjects provide

students with a focus for developing vocational skills and exploring their career options.

The Specialist Groupings consist of subjects which complement one another naturally.

The Services Groupings comprise subjects which complement one another in a commercial context.

Post Leaving Business Course

 

This course is FETAC (level 5) Business Studies (BBSXX)

 

This course has proven to be an outstanding success in obtaining first class employment for its graduates. The course covers:

 

  • Text Production
  • Word Processing
  • Work Experience
  • Accounting - Manual and Computerised
  • Business Law
  • Legal Studies
  • Mathematics
  • Communications
  • Business Administration

 

The course provides ready access to worthwhile employment and also is accepted as an entry qualification for many Third Level courses.
